Dr. Yevheniia Varyvoda is an interdisciplinary environmental scientist at the University of Arizona.
Her research focus is on leveraging nature-based solutions for enhancing the resilience of communities, services, and systems upon which they depend. Her specific expertise includes ecosystem services in food systems, a methodological framework for impact assessment in case of emergency situations, interventions for existing and emerging food safety issues in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Varyvoda has been responsible for agribusiness recommendations that are sustainable in terms of their use of, and effects on, the natural resource base. She was the leading national expert and coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) project “Capacity building needs assessment for the implementation of the UN/ECE SEA Protocol”. Dr. Varyvoda helped communities strengthen environmental governance, shifting to ecosystem services utilization, building resilience to natural hazards, managing natural resources, and developing capacities for future environmental stewardship. As a national expert, she was responsible for promoting the implementation of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) as the key instrument for integrating environmental concerns into the policy-making process for Central and Eastern Europe, resulted in the elaboration of the national strategy on Strategic Environmental Assessment capacity building in Ukraine.
